Berlin 1938
Beyond the Führer’s speeches, blood red banners and amidst the sea of blond hair and blue eyes stood a little girl with black hair. A dangerous color in Nazi Germany.
She had been told to stay inside, to never walk during the rallies but Alfred had stolen her marbles. So she wandered through the crowd, a rose amid a thousand daisies.
“Christ killer-Christ killer” “By god look at her hair, a sign of the devil” “I thought they were being evacuated and disinfected in Auschwitz”
Upon finding Alfred she made sure he received his fair share of curses and insults for making her walk through the rally.Insults and punches were thrown back and forth, but within a few moments they were friends again. A nazi boy and a jewish girl.
Their friendship was like no other. They played atop the shattered glass of Jewish Businesses and ate lollies at Rudolph schmitt’s. Even at the height of its power the only place in the world that the Führer could not conquer was an innocent child’s mind
May,1938
One summer day tasted of lemon flavored lollies and sunlight, but then came the rain. All that was left of this sunny lemon day was Alfred's and Ilse screams filling the air and the rifle of the Nazi soldier prodding Ilse in the back. Ilse and her mother were put into a cattle train, packed with thousands of other black haired people and sent away.
8 hours later Ilse and her mother got off the train
Where are we mama?
Auschwitz.
Ilse held her marbles close to her chest.
